Details: The cups themselves are made to the same exacting specifications by Takatori Shinobazu Hachinojo at the Takatori Hassen Kiln in Toho-mura. The urushi (lacquer) coating on the exterior surface of the entire vessel is generally clear. The lacquer provides a subdued sheen, but it also provides a protective natural protective coating. The exterior of the sakazuki is intended to express a reserved and tranquil spirit. The cups may appear at first glance to be rather flashy; but what you actually observe is the natural aesthetic flipped inside-out. Sitting on a table, the interior is on top, facing the observer. But when one uses the vessel–that is, drinking from it–it is the bottom that faces the other party. In use, the bold surface is on the inside. This dichotomy is representative of one critical aspect of traditional Japanese aesthetic–to be calm and reserved in one’s public interactions while maintaining a positive and adventurous spirit. Every sakazuki is an original, handmade product. As such, no two vessels are exactly alike. 【Notes】 ・All items are handmade and are one-of-a-kind.
